Chelsea Clinton is bringing attention to the lack of interest young girls are starting to have in math and science. She has actively started to call on Hollywood to help bring awareness to the issue. Recent studies show many young girls in middle school and high school are not given enough encouragement to continue their education in these subjects. More attention is given to the boys in the classroom and they begin to excel, while the girls start to lose interest. Clinton realizes that this is a major problem and is looking for others to help her.

“We need Hollywood to make movies and television shows about sexy female engineers,” Clinton said in an interview to CNN. “ I think girls are not seeing role models-they’re seeing boys who are astronauts, boys who are engineers, they’re seeing boys who start Facebook or Google, they’re not seeing girls, its really hard to imagine yourself as something that you don’t see, particularly when you’re a kid.” The daughter of former president, Bill Clinton, wants to see more young and motivated women as STEM role models. She believes that more women should try to be positive examples to young girls and show that there is potential for them to succeed in these areas of education.

STEM stands for The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education Coalition. This organization represents all different types of people in the workforce including workers with some background knowledge of these subjects, educators, scientists, and engineers. All members of this education coalition are dedicated to making sure that these subjects are taught in school and young students get the opportunity to learn as much as they can. This organization strives to bring awareness to this issue in front of Congress and encourages federal investment in STEM education.

Along with positive STEM role models, young girls also need support from their teachers and family role models. Clinton says that she credits her success and achievements to her strong role models, her mother and grandmother. “My grandmother put a lot of positive pressure on me to do more, and particularly after her passing I felt like I did need to be doing more,” Clinton said. “We had a responsibility gene she said, particularity the girls in our family.” Chelsea feels that once girls have positive role models in both their home life and in Hollywood, girls will start to discover than they can achieve as much as they put their minds to.

With the movie Man of Steel currently in theaters, eyeglass carrier Warby Parker decided to launch a new collection in honor of the super hero. There are two different pairs of glasses for fans to choose from for both men and women. Clark Kent enthusiasts can now truly look like Superman and give back to people in need all at the same time.

Warby Parker works alongside the nonprofit organization, VisionSpring, to give individuals in need a pair of eyewear that they cannot afford. One billion people across the globe do not have enough money to purchase much needed eyeglasses. With the purchase of one pair of glasses from Warby Parker, the company will donate a pair to someone in need. When an individual purchases a pair of limited edition Man of Steel eyewear, the charitable eyeglass company is also donating $15 from each sale to 826NYC. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to encouraging children ages 6-18 to explore their creative and expository writing skills.

Although Cyndi Lauper is no stranger to the spotlight, she was overwhelmed with emotion Sunday night. The singer, known for her 1983 hit Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, won her first ever Tony award for Best Score for the show Kinky Boots. “I want to thank Broadway for welcoming me. I understand how hard you work, but your hard work inspires me,” said Lauper as she received her award.

Although the Tony Awards were a first to Cyndi this year, by no means was this her first experience receiving an award. She has won multiple Grammy Awards, American Video Awards, Billboard Awards, and MTV Music Awards. This Tony Award was especially meaningful to the talented singer because she was the first ever woman to win for Best Score. Kinky Boots went on to win 6 awards that evening including Lauper’s legendary win.

The famous singer is well known for her incredible musical skills but she also makes headlines for her volunteer and charity work. Lauper has been honored for her work that she does with the homeless as well as the foundation she started, True Colors Fund.

Other individuals making headlines on Sunday for their great talents were Tracy Letts for Best Performance by an actor, Cicely Tyson for Best Performance by an actress, and Pam MacKinnon for Best Direction of a play. Kinky Boots won the award for Best Musical.

As the summer months begin, young teens will be out of school and on the roads. These next few months are some of the most dangerous times for young individuals to be driving. Seven of the ten most dangerous driving days occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Car accidents are the leading cause of death for young adults. This summer, DoSomething.org, Olivia Munn, Sprint, and Toyota have all teamed up to help discourage teens from texting while driving. DoSomething.com has introduced their campaign, Thumb Wars, to help bring awareness to this issue.

The Thumb Wars campaign has entered its third year of providing teens with a fun, new way to realize that texting while driving is not acceptable. Young drivers sign up at dosomething.org and receive two pairs of thumb socks. Although it does sound silly, this approach encouraged over 230,000 teens to stop texting and driving and also speak out on the issue. “We see a deep amount of engagement from teens on this campaign,” says David DeLuca, Head of Campaigns at DoSomething.org. “They take the time to stage creative and fun anti-texting and driving scenes with their friends and the thumb socks. We get amazing and hilarious photos. This campaign is about friends having fun together while sharing an important message.”

Olivia Munn, star of HBO’s The Newsroom, has shown her support for this important campaign. Other celebrities such as Joel McHale and Harry Shum Jr. have also shown their support on the issue by making it more accessible and relatable for teens. To find out more about the Thumb Wars campaign, visit: www.dosomething.org/thumbwars.

While The Nature Conservancy has been preserving nature and the environment for decades, a variety of different artists have teamed up with the organization to promote a better earth. The Nature Conservancy has the support of Macklemore, Xavier Rudd, and Glen Hansard to help spread its message. All of these artists have joined the All Hands On Earth campaign in hopes that fans will begin to take action as well.

Macklemore teamed up with DJ Ryan Lewis and went on to become the initial duo to have their first two singles reach no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Macklemore, a Seattle native, remembers his childhood as much more than just times spent in front of the television. “ You have mountains in the distance, you have water right there, you have trees, you have this vibrant green. You have kind of the best of all worlds…on a sunny day,” says Macklemore in reference to his hometown. After gaining millions of fans thanks to hit songs such as “Thrift Shop”, this Hip Hop artist hopes to encourage his followers to appreciate the environment around them.

Singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd has also joined the movement to preserve nature. The Australian native is an established multi-instrumentalist that writes and sings from the heart. In 2012, Rudd was nominated for an Australian Independent Record Label Association Award. A review in the Seattle Post Intelligencer noted, “Over the course of his career, Rudd has evolved from being the accompaniment for surfers and late night beach parties with an environmental conscience to singing about having a spiritual bond with the planet and the compassion required to create it…he gives us his vision of the potential for a better world.”

Academy Award winning songwriter and vocalist Glen Hansard is also an avid supporter of The National Conservatory. He is apart of the Irish band, The Frames, and appeared in the documentary The Swell Season. The Dublin native focuses most of his concern on the preservation of forests. He encourages everyone to embrace nature and appreciate what is still left.

Jaime Oliver’s 2nd Annual Food Revolution Day takes place today, May 17th, encouraging the awareness of good food and vital cooking skills. The Jaime Oliver Food Foundation is a California-based non-profit corporation that strives to educate schools and businesses about good food choices. The foundation provides hands-on training and encourages food knowledge and skills. Over 1,000 activities are planned to take place all over the world in support of the food revolution including a Food Revolution Food Truck cooking for 10,000 Googlers and their families along with Uruguayan ambassadors leading a flash mob in the street markets of Montevideo.

“I’m completely humbled by the amazing amount of support from all over the world this year,” says Jamie Oliver. “Food Revolution Day started last year from a little idea I had to have one day where everyone who cared about real food, home-cooking and better food education could join together, stand united and shout loud. In 2013, Food Revolution Day has taken a huge step forward. We’ve had support from celebrities, chefs, even a world leader, which is absolutely fantastic, but it’s our hard-working ambassadors and all the incredible people all over the world who contribute to making it super special with the events they run and take part in, no matter how big or small.”

Different companies throughout the US are also taking part in today’s Food Revolution. Northern California and Reno Whole Foods Market are offering cooking classes and other exciting activities. A percentage of the week’s sales from Fresh Direct are being donated to the Jamie Oliver Foundation. Do you want to get involved in Food Revolution Day on May 17th?
Rock for Justice is a movement that encourages and supports collaborations among artists and social justice causes. The organization has released a compilation, Songs for Justice, where proceeds were given to organizations including Invisible Children, Give a Damn? documentary project, and The Hunger Project, all of which are social justice based. The record involves a unique variety of musical style and consists of thirteen different artists including Generationals, Kindred Fall, and The Narrative. Rock for Justice was able to donate over $9 per sale directly to the organizations because each artist donated their mechanical royalties.

Invisible Children is a non-profit organization that was founded in order to bring awareness to the behavior of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Africa. One of the main actions this organization seeks to cease is the abduction of innocent children and forcing them to become soldiers in the army. Invisible Children spreads its mission by traveling to high schools and colleges across the country and showing their cause in an informative movie.

Give a Damn? is documentary consisting of three friends that are attempting to live in poverty with just $1.25 per day across three continents. Two of the friends are idealistic activists while the other is a skeptic. The three young men created this documentary to encourage young people to make a difference.

The Hunger Project is an organizations that is highly motivated to end world hunger and poverty. The goal of this project is to have a world where every human being leads a healthy, independent life of dignity.

Jumpstart hosted their 8th annual Scribble to Novels fundraising event. In attendance this year was best-selling author, acclaimed actress and producer Tina Fey and Glamour Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Cindi Leive. While the event highlighted the achievements of both these talented women, it also brought attention to the organization’s mission of potentially one day having every young child enter school prepared to mature and succeed.

This fundraising event depends on the support of celebrities and leaders in early childhood education to help share the importance of literature in young children’s lives. “Jumpstart helps young children develop the essential skills they need to be ready for kindergarten and a bright academic future. We know that children from economically disadvantaged communities tend to fall behind and stay behind their more affluent peers,” said Sharon Reilly, executive director of Jumpstart in the Tri-state area. The Scribbles to Novels event was had 600 supporters in attendance and raised over $1 million to help the support the organization’s program in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

The seventh annual UNICEF Tap Project is set to take place but with a different approach this year. The project will be digital and allow Facebook users the opportunity to participate. The UNICEF Tap Project is a nationwide campaign that provides children from deprived countries with access to clean water. The Facebook app allows users to become “taps” and all of their connections become “pipes”. With a $5 donation to the UNICEF Tap Project, the user will be able to designate two friends to receive water and give them the opportunity to donate as well. As the water network grows on the social media site, users will be able to see the water connections between friends and how their donations impact the lives of children around the world.

Waterborne illnesses kill close to 4,000 children under the age of five every day. With a $5 donation, UNICEF can provide a child with access to clean water for 200 days. “More young kids die from dirty water and poor sanitation than from measles, malaria, and AIDS combined,” said Caryl Stern, President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. “Across the developing world, children often walk miles to the nearest sources to gather water for their families, forcing them to miss out on an education. UNICEF believes that ZERO children should be deprived of clean water and basic sanitation.”

With the help of UNICEF supporters including Judd Apatow, Lenny Kravitz, Seth Rogen, and Emmy Rossum the Tap Project has raised more than $3.5 million for water and sanitation programs benefiting children in Belize, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic.
